Why Diets Don't Work
Did you know that 70% of women have been on a diet some time in their life. It doesn’t matter whether it’s The Cabbage Diet, The Atkins diet or the Milkshake Diet, women will try almost anything in their frantic desire to lose weight.
Unfortunately the results are usually the same. You lose some weight at first, only to put it back on, often with more on top, no matter what diet you try. So here is why diets don’t work.
Most diets are hard to do as they involve significant changes to our normal eating habits. They often involve time consuming calorie counting, eliminating all our favourite foods, eating different meals to the rest of our family and usually resulting in us feeling deprived and hungry all the time.
We all start off with a great deal of determination and willpower to change in order to lose weight but this wears off as time goes by and we are faced with every day pressures and temptations.
Diets make you hungry and in turn create cravings for the very foods you are trying to avoid. The surest way to crave something is to say you can’t have it which in turn makes you feel depressed and this then leads to bingeing thus creating a vicious circle. Feelings of guilt and a sense of inadequacy occur and you end up eating everything in sight because you say to yourself “ I’ve messed up today so I might as well eat , I’ll start again tomorrow”.
This results in going from one diet to another, hoping to find the “Right One”, but unfortunately there isn’t such a diet and you end up yo-yo dieting, gaining more weight with each one.
The reason why diets don’t work is because they don’t address the real problem which is often a psychological one. One of the main reasons for overeating is associated with emotion rather than hunger. Women in particular often turn to food for emotional comfort, this is especially relevant during menopause when they feel they are no longer needed as their children leave the nest, or because they don’t feel as loved by their partners. Some turn to food to cope with negative feelings like anger or loss- after a bad day at work or after a row with a loved one.
The main reason why diets don’t work is because you have to make permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits if you want to lose weight and keep it off; otherwise those old eating habits will creep back in and no matter how much weight you have managed to lose, it will all come back and you will find yourself back to where you started.
For long term weight loss, you have to make some lifestyle changes!
